On SC junking of ‘Kalikasan’ writ vs Bulacan airport project
“Appalled, but not completely surprised. The Supreme Court’s junking of the Writ of Kalikasan filed by environmentalists against the construction of an aerotropolis project in Bulacan was a 180-degree-turn on its very own writ of continuing mandamus to clean-up, restore, and rehabilitate Manila Bay.
Issued in 2008, the SC ordered 13 government agencies to rehabilitate and preserve Manila Bay and restore its waters for recreational use and fishery resources development.
How could the writ be not sufficient in form and substance when it basically advances the SC order on rehabilitation through protection of the gulf against a project that would destroy its marine biodiversity and displace the people who depend on it?
We call on the SC to stick with its ruling on Manila Bay, by upholding its writ of continuing mandamus not only to reduce the levels of fecal bacteria, but moreover, to protect the bay against all forms of destructive projects, especially reclamation,” Fernando Hicap, PAMALAKAYA National Chairperson and former Anakpawis Party-list Representative.
