“Why is Secretary Roque coming to China’s defense? Just because he provided legal assistance to Filipino fishers affected by China before doesn’t mean he has a lasting knowledge about our worsening situation on the ground. Now that Mr. Roque has completely turned his back on Filipino fishers by seemingly lawyering for China, he loses any ethos to speak on behalf of the aggrieved fisherfolks. Our situation in the West Philippine Sea has ever worsened especially now that our own government is an enabler of Chinese aggression, simply put,” Bobby Roldan, PAMALAKAYA Vice Chair for Luzon said in a statement.

“This is neither a publicity stunt nor a bluff. These are Filipino fishers standing up against China and upholding our rights in the West Philippine Sea. Likewise, this is a defiance against President Duterte who has completely turned his back on our national sovereignty and the Filipino people. Our own government’s cowardice and submission to China will not stop us from asserting what is rightfully ours. Wala na kaming aasahan sa pala-sukong administrasyon ni Duterte, kaming mga mangingisda na ang kikilos para sa aming karapatang mangisda sa inaagaw na teritoryo ng China,” Fernando Hicap, PAMALAKAYA National Chairperson said in a statement.

“It is without a doubt that the vessels detected to be lingering in our territory are Chinese-owned as they are the only country capable of massing and has a consistent presence in our waters. They may be part of the 220 Chinese vessels spotted in Julian Felipe Reef last March,” Fernando Hicap, PAMALAKAYA National Chairperson said in a statement.

“It is unlikely that we would be able to retrieve our waters from China, not especially under the puppet regime of Mr. Duterte who keeps on kowtowing to the Asian superpower. It would be easier to diplomatically and decisively assert our sovereign rights if a President is not subservient and could stand up to foreign aggressors,” Ronnel Arambulo, a PAMALAKAYA leader said during the fluvial protest in Botolan, Zambales.

“Hindi na kasi kami makalapit para mangisda sa bandang Panatag Shoal, kaya nagsisiksikan kami sa loob ng 15-kilometer municipal waters hanggang sa pinakamalayong 60 kilometro mula sa baybayin kung saan mas kakaunti ang nahuhuling isda,” Roldan, a fisherman in Botolan, Zambales said.
