“Opening our floodgates for imported fish inflicts serious harm to our struggling fishing industry. Its immediate impact would be felt by our local fisherfolk whose products would be outcompeted by imported fish. This importation measure that stems from liberalization policies should stop,” Ronnel Arambulo, PAMALAKAYA Spokesman said during the protest.

Balikbayan galunggong a probability – fisherfolk group
Manila, Philippines – Balikbayan galunggong (round scad fish) is highly possible given the evident intrusion of industrial fishing fleets from China and Vietnam – the countries in which the Philippines will import 60, 000 metric tons of galunggong starting this month. This was according to the militant fisherfolk group Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (PAMALAKAYA-Pilipinas) on Tuesday, October 12.

“Even with the closed fishing season, there are still many fish in the seas and in the market to choose from. No need to open our floodgates for imported fish because it threatens our local fishers whose fishery and marine products have been always outcompeted by imported ones,” Hicap said.
