Rebuilding Lives, Resuming the Journey for Fish
Typhoon Haiyan, locally known as Typhoon Yolanda, is deemed as the strongest super typhoon the world has ever known. According to the December 9, 2013 report of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Mangement Council (NDRRMC), more than 2.3 million families or almost 11 million people were affected in forty-four (44) provinces. It also reported the number of deaths rose to almost six thousand (6,000), more than twenty-seven thousand people are injured while 1,779 people are still missing.
Almost forty percent (40%) of the affected families have been displaced by Typhoon Haiyan. The total estimated cost of damage is over 30 billion PHP. But, these are not just figures in reports. These are families, friends, fellow Filipinos and fellow men.
Typhoon Haiyan struck and devastated coastal communities, home to millions of fisherfolk. Considered as the poorest of the poor in the Philippines, these fisherfolk lost almost everything they had. Many of them lost lives, loved ones, homes and livelihood. Massive relief efforts has helped these families survive.
Now, they need support for the rehabilitation of their homes and communities to help them get back on their feet and move on with their lives. Granting these fishermen fishing boats and fishing nets would give them hope and the opportunity to rebuild their lives.
