Manila, Philippines – “If there is someone who is not in favor to end the decades old-civil war in the country, it’s definitely this military man Senator Antonio Trillanes IV who keeps obstructing the peace process between the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) and Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP).”

This was the statement of the militant fisherfolk group Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya-Pilipinas), reacting to Sen. Trillanes’ objection against the resumption of peace talks between the NDFP and GRP.

Trillanes had warned presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte on his openness in dealing with the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) to end the decade-civil war waging in the country and even threatening to mount a military coup if Duterte favored the demands of the CPP.

Trillanes and his small group in Magdalo are acting like a peace saboteurs for getting in the way of the peace process and pave the steps towards a lasting peace in the country.” Salvador France, Pamalakaya vice-chairperson said in a statement.

Pamalakaya said that Duterte’s eagerness to open the table for the peace negotiations is a welcome development to achieve the just and lasting peace that is based on socio-economic reforms and ending  poverty among the Filipino people.

The resumption of the peace talks isn’t just about ceasefire between CPP and Government forces. It is about instituting fundamental social, economic and political reforms to end the enduring poverty, hunger and injustice long suffered by the Filipino people under the tattered ruling system. And Trillanes tries to derail all of these!” France added.

The fisherfolk group advised Trillanes to instead focus on  preparing his piece on the 63 consultants whom he budgeted P1.63 million of taxpayer’s money every month and the backdoor discussions he undertook with China about the West Philippine Sea without informing the public on its real agenda. The Filipino people have long been waiting for his explanations on these and they deserve no less.

“Peace process is a road towards a pro-people socio economic reform like domestic industrialization, genuine agrarian reform and development that will end the decades old poverty, injustice and inequality in the country.” France ended. ###
