Bacoor folks still vigilant against reclamation

Bacoor, Cavite — Amid the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) opposition against the 944-hectare reclamation project in the coastal waters of Bacoor, the local fisherfolk and coastal residents under the group Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (PAMALAKAYA) still took the streets on Tuesday, to call on other residents to be vigilant and strengthen unity to defend their community against any attempt to continue the stalled reclamation project.

In a picket held in front of the Bacoor City Hall on Tuesday morning, PAMALAKAYA municipal chapter Alyansa ng mga Magdaragat sa Bacoor Bay welcomed the DENR pronouncement not to issue an environmental compliance certificate (ECC) to the reclamation project due to its environmental implications and socio-economic impacts on the coastal residents.

Candinato, who owns a small mussel farm in the town, said more than 700 fishing and coastal families are directly affected by the planned reclamation, some of them will be relocated to far-flung areas with no livelihood nearby.

Candinato also vowed that her group will continue to strengthen its rank, and will not rest until the reclamation in Bacoor, as well as in the entire Manila Bay will be totally scrapped.
