Fishers remember “Ka Randy’s” significant contribution for environmental protection

Manila, Philippines “Ka Randy assured the protection and rehabilitation of the environment, including coastal and marine, through a provision in one of the core agendas of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) to the Philippine government during the stalled peace negotiations,” According to the militant fisherfolk group Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (PAMALAKAYA) on Sunday.

“Ka Randy was a staunch land and environmental defender. He worked for a framework of environmental protection which is inclusive and comprehensive for the benefit of the people, especially farmers, fishers, and indigenous peoples,” Fernando Hicap, PAMALAKAYA National Chairperson said in a statement.

Hicap, former Anakpawis Party-list Representative, said that the NDFP’s draft of the Comprehensive Agreement on Socio-Economic Reforms (CASER) that Echanis played a key role in drafting, rejects destructive projects in coastal and marine areas such as reclamation, conversion, and large-scale mining. They are stated at Part III, Letter C, articled IV and VI.

Also serving as PAMALAKAYA’s consultant on several sectoral campaigns, the fishers’ group said that Echanis had consistently reminded the group to always promptly denounce the acts of Chinese aggression in the West Philippine Sea, and to assert the fishing and sovereign rights over the country’s exclusive economic zone.

“His exemplary contribution to the struggle of the Filipino peasants and fisherfoks is as huge as a vast expanses of a deep ocean, and will remain an inspiration for the fishing people,” Hicap ended. ###
