Manila, Philippines – A group of small fisherfolks on Monday said it is considering to root for candidates of the 1Sambayan coalition on the 2022 presidential elections “based on electoral platforms that are completely opposed to the Duterte administration’s policies on economy, human rights, and foreign relations.
“We don’t see any problem with rooting for 1Sambayan’s candidates regardless of political affiliation as long as it is a complete turnaround of Duterte’s policies. Basically, we don’t want another leader who would kowtow to China or to any foreign powers at the expense of our national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Likewise, our preferred next set of leaders should have high regard for human rights and democratic freedom, not another strongman posturing who would only continue Duterte’s fascist policies,” Fernando Hicap, PAMALAKAYA National Chairperson and former Anakpawis Party-list representative said in a statement.
The group’s statement came after he newly-formed 1Sambayan released its list of candidates for the 2022 national elections.
PAMALAKAYA earlier expressed strong opposition against any reelection of President Duterte, which the group said is a “circumvention of the constitution” and a “maneuver of Duterte to maintain its tyrannical rule, anti-people policies, and subservience to China”.
“Any candidate who would refuse to follow the path of Duterte deserves our support in the 2022 elections. We expect the 1Sambayan coalition to nominate candidates who are not only critical of the Duterte administration, but would pursue total reverse of his existing policies that starve and kill people, and surrender our territory,” ended Hicap. ###
